The First Day
Today's adventure is 6 to 7 hours of Riding over the ridge of Mount Yamnuska to our first night's destination, the Old Hussey's Cabin site. The horseback trip starts off with a climb onto the ridge of Mount Yamnuska, a Native name meaning "Wall of Stone", or “End Mountain”.
With a breathtaking view of the Bow Valley, we continue over the back side of the mountain and test out our riding skills. Experienced guides will take you through quiet creek crossings, over majestic ridges with spectacular views, and finally through dense forests to a quaint cabin site named after an old Brewster Family friend.
Spend the evening around the campfire recounting stories of the old times, and enjoying a traditional cowboy dinner. When you are ready to retire for the evening you can head for your cabin, already made up with bedding and a comfortable place to lay your head. Our cabins can accommodate up to four people.
"Each of our eight trips has some great & funny memories. Great in the re-telling and thank heavens some things don’t change like the peace this place brings, the spirit, and how can they keep finding such interesting & fun wranglers & cooks!!"
Thanks, Dale Pedersen & Doug Vaughan, London, Ontario
The Second Day
The backcountry adventure continues as we head northwest to the famed Brewster Company Ranch. Thoughts today will wonder back to a time long ago as you continue to Live the Lore of the West.
We will climb mountain passes, keeping an eye out for Rocky Mountain Big Horn sheep, deer, elk, and possibly even wild horses! Traveling through meandering river bottoms, and encountering beaver dams will keep you riding tall in your saddle all day. Our 5 to 6 hour excursion will bring us to the Meadow Creek Cabins, with its panoramic vista of Black Rock Mountain and surrounding mountain ranges. Enjoy a few stories around the campfire about past Brewster experiences, or most likely a few of your own, all the while under a beautiful starlit sky. If you are lucky you will even hear the Meadow Creek wolf pack, as they astound you with their lonely calls.
* On Overnight trips, guests travel back to the Kananaskis Ranch on the trails of yesterday enjoying southward views of the Bow and Kananaskis Valleys.
The Third Day
Not wanting to leave this magical Meadow Creek, we explore the natural beauty of the area, before departing back on our journey to Hussey's for one last night together. Southward and across the Ghost River, with rugged peaks as a magnificent backdrop, we travel the old pack trails exploring the splendour that is the Canadian Rocky Mountains before departing back on our journey to Hussey's.
The Fourth Day
We pack up to leave Hussey's; our last day on the trail together, but we will not soon forget our adventure of the past three days. Today's trail leads us along grassy ridges beneath the watchful eye of ancient snow covered peaks, back to the Ranch with a memorable adventure fresh in our minds and a picturesque view of Mount Yamnuska.
Terrain
The riding is on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains bordering Banff National Park. For those asking for specific location information, we are also along the Ghost River Natural area, and near the southern tip of Lake Minnewanka, Yamnuska Mountain and Black Rock Mountain. There is no opportunity to gallop as the terrain is often steep, a lot of ups and downs, and well treed. All rides are at a walking pace.
"We saw beaver, deer, fox, hawks, and heard coyotes under a star-filled sky. Saw many signs of bear, both black bear and grizzlies. This place is truly wild and wonderful. Thanks for the memorable trip."
